B.4 Sustainable Development

The Directorate's Resource Management Plan provided guidance on sustainability issues in CMTD, including an annual plan of activities to address management of water, electricity and gas consumption, waste production and recycling initiatives.

The focus of the plan is to:

Actions the Directorate has already undertaken include:

Work is currently underway to investigate the installation of more efficient lighting in the Canberra Nara Centre and the building owner is continuing to update a range of building systems to improve overall efficiency in the building.

Sustainable development performance 2012-2013 and 2013-2014

In June 2014, the Government established an Enterprise Sustainability Platform (ESP), to provide a consistent approach to reporting sustainability data in future years.  The ESP provides continuously updated, accurate and auditable water, energy (electricity and gas), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data and utility billing cost information for its assets and agencies, a function which has not previously been available.

The Directorate had staff located in both the Canberra Nara Centre and 221 London Circuit.  CMTD only occupied a small portion of 221 London Circuit.  The building houses a wide range of government and private tenants.  Full ESD figures are not available for the Directorate's section of this building.

As full details are only available for the Canberra Nara Centre, the two locations are reported separately.

2 ACT Property Group purchased 7,530 MWh (Mega Watt hours) of GreenPower on behalf of the ACT Government, representing 5% of the ACT Government's energy consumption for 2013‑14. This will be reported in the Territory and Municipal Services Directorate Annual Report.

3 This increase is being investigated in conjunction with the building owner.

4The lower km travelled is a result of the removal of a higher overall usage executive vehicle with a lower overall usage pool vehicle.

5 The reduction in fuel used relates to the lower kilometres travelled (see note 4) and the replacement of a petrol powered vehicle with an electric vehicle.

6 The decrease is attributed to the Directorate encouraging the electronic distribution of documents and double sided printing.

7 The increase in comingled recycling is attributed to promotion of recycling and gradual cultural change.

8 The reduction in paper and cardboard recycled is attributed to a reduction in paper being used (see note 6).

9 The reduction is due to the contracted service provider ceasing trading and an extended delay in progressing the contract with a new service provider. The new arrangements commenced in May 2014.

10 The increase in emissions is due to increased gas usage (see note 3) and a reduction in purchase of green power (see note 2).

11 Decrease in emissions in transport corresponds with decrease in kilometres travelled and fuel used (see notes 4 and 5).

2 Staff located in 221 London Circuit utilise vehicles included in the Canberra Nara Centre figures in the table above and also vehicles reported on in the Commerce and Works Directorate Annual Report.

3 The 2012-13 paper figure is for the period December 2012 – June 2013 only.

4The business needs of high resolution multiple copying/scanning of records requires a higher usage of non-recycled paper.
