Calls on Air

Directorate:  TCCS

Issue: Concerned about the new bus station in Dickson and if the number seven route will still stop there.

Response: The Chief Minister reassured the caller that the number seven route would remain the same.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: There is a light that is off in front of her house in Matheson Crescent Weetangera. The light is the only light for those using the footpath from the bus stop and might become a security concern.

Response:  The Chief Minister advised that an ACT Government Official will contact the caller to find out the details.

Outcome:  TCCS spoke to the caller and the light was repaired on Friday, 12 May 2017.

Directorate: CMTEDD – Public Housing Renewal

Issue: The caller is non-supportive of the location of the proposed Community Housing because of the bushfire threat, no bus stops etc. The caller is also concerned about the lack of consultation.

Response: The Chief Minister recommitted the Government’s commitment to Housing in the areas and said that the Minister responsible and other MLAs had been speaking to the community about the issues raised.

Directorate: Education and TCCS

Issue: The caller wanted to thank TCCS for their follow up from a previous talkback request (termites). She also asked if the ACT government provided additional support to children in terms of school uniforms, excursions etc. She had been contacted by the Smith Family and was amazed that the Government did not already provide support to families in need.

Response: The Chief Minister advised the called that ACT Schools do have provisions to support students in needs with school uniforms and excursions and that the Smith Family runs a national campaign to provide additional support to students in need.

Directorate: EPSDD

Issue: The caller and his family have erected a small memorial for their two sons on Mt Taylor. The memorial has been removed without their knowledge.

Response: The Chief Minister apologised to the caller and said that an ACT Government Officer would contact the family to discuss what happened and how they can move forward with a memorial into the future.

Outcome:  The Director of the Parks and Conservation Service phoned the caller and apologised for the manner in which the memorial was removed.  The Director outlined to the family that less obvious memorials such as trees could be placed in the Reserve as an alternative to their memorial.  The Director and the caller agreed to have a follow-up conversation to discuss what an appropriate alternative memorial could be.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: There is a trip hazard on the footpath in front of the McDonald’s in Fyshwick.

Response:  The Chief Minister said that TCCS would investigate and fix.

Outcome: TCCS spoke with the caller and advised that the repair work to remove the trip hazard was completed.

Directorate: CMTEDD - EDD

Issue: The caller is supportive of a new stadium and suggested that engineering solutions would solve some of the problems identified with the location of the proposed stadium.

Response: The Chief Minister said that the ACT government was looking into a range of options and ideas. Some of the issues are around how often the stadium would be used and the needs of the sporting codes.

Directorate: CSD- Housing

Issue: The caller is supportive of social and community housing. However, the caller feels that Housing should have a hard line approach to tenants that behave badly.

Response:  The Chief Minister pointed out that bad behaviour of neighbours is not restricted to tenants in community or social housing properties.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: Stray dogs, why are there no rangers on after hours to pick them up?

Response:  We do have rangers on call – but they can’t get to every call. Often if they go out, the dogs have left the area.

SMS/TEXT

Directorate: Housing

Issue: Does Public Housing audits their housing? I ask because I know a single woman with a daughter who lives in a 4-bedroom/2 bathroom house. Surely a family of 5 or more could better utilise this place instead.

Outcome: Housing ACT has attempted to contact the caller and provided the caller with contact details so they can get further details of their concerns.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: I live in Fraser & there is a flight of steps at the end of Keane place which badly needs a handrail. Could you please arrange this?

Outcome: A TCCS officer inspected the site and work is expected to be completed by the end of August 2017.

Directorate: EDD

Issue: Is the Land Rent scheme compulsory in all new suburbs? If no, why not.

Outcome: An officer from the Land Development Agency contacted the caller and gave a brief explanation of how land rent is determined. The officer explained that the availability of land rent is only for blocks sold by ballot at $300,000 or less, such as the recent Taylor ballot.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: On Feb 10 you were asked about the condition of the Monaro Hwy between Isabella Dr and Johnson Dr and said you would look into it. 12 weeks later it is obvious nothing had been done because at a minimum the pothole behind Gilmore would of been repaired

Outcome:  TCCS has attempted to speak to the caller to discuss the issue in more detail.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: Can't believe how much parking has been made into loading zones in civic - these spaces are relied on by disabled drivers working in the buildings around Akuna Street. Making it so much harder for the disabled. 5 parks in hillside lane, 1 in Akuna Street, 3 in Scotts Crossing

Outcome: TCCS spoke with the caller and advised that an officer from Roads ACT will investigate.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: I live in a street in red hill that runs off the south end of La Perouse. This section of this road - from the red hill shops to Mugga Way- has no effective street lighting whatsoever. In contrast, the north end - from the school to Manuka - has very effective lighting. There are 3 bus stops in the south section that have people alighting in virtual darkness. Not to mention dog walkers who might go out when home from work. Could someone please come out after sunset to see.

Outcome: TCCS has assessed the lighting and provided advice to the caller.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: Works on Northbourne and Iowanna Street have blocked the path past the shop, and block the ramp to the shop in the park. Does anyone consider how difficult and how far it is for disabled people to access the walking detours? It's a long long detour.

Outcome: TCCS spoke with the caller and explained that temporary footpath closures do consider detours and all path users and that some closures, due to nature of works, necessitate closures for safety reasons. TCCS advised the caller that they will review the closure and detour at this location.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: Could you please address the issue of the effects to vehicular traffic as the tram goes over the bridge. As it is it will not hold the rails without removal of 1 car lane in each direction.

Outcome: TCCS spoke with the caller and discussed the assessments that would be carried out on Commonwealth Avenue bridge as a part of design work to enable light rail, including structural and traffic impact assessments.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: We have two claret ash trees on our nature strip both have significant disease and die back. I have brought this to TAMS a few years ago and nothing has been done about them.

Outcome: TCCS staff inspected the above mentioned trees on two occasions following initial reports. The trees remain on a program for pruning or removal depending on the Outcome of a current inspection.
