Directorate: TCCS

Issue: The bus stop at the Canberra Centre on the Ainslie Avenue, the platform needs extending so that people getting off at the back of the bus stop don’t have to get off at the road.   .

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: Thanks for taking the call. Just a quick one, it's that slip lane really, Yamba Drive and kind of the hospital going on to Hindmarsh Drive, turning right at the lights. The cars back up there, and I gather Roads and Transport must know there's a problem, because the punitive solution that's been put in place is bollards to stop people going up on the median strip, but I think if there's been that much traffic going up on the median strip, there's really. A longer slip lane and that would be a more productive and helpful answer for it.

OUTCOME: TCCS contacted the caller. The officer explained that a longer slip lane on Yamba Drive would unlikely be of benefit without a significant redesign of the Yamba Drive / Hindmarsh Drive intersection. TCCS is investigating further how this intersection can be improved.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: My father, a very aged gentleman well into his eighties, was shopping at Kaleen shops, the regular shops, the bigger ones with the large supermarket that starts with a C. He was parked in the disabled carpark, wanders across, over to the footpath and across the garden bed there is all this exposed aggie piping and dead trees and the paving is all broken. And falling apart, there's holes in the paving everywhere, and he took a terrible tumble. Hurt his knee and grazed his head and broke a bottle he was carrying to the chemist. He was attended to by lovely local people and the chemist who's there. I have since been, I rang your office Andrew and they suggested I ring this gentleman's office and do Fix My Street, which I did.  And I also sent some photos to Fix My Street or to Mix Ups, I'm not quite sure. Haven't heard anything back yet, but frankly, it is amazingly unsightly. But it's also extraordinarily dangerous and I do have lots of photos that just show where the gravel has fallen away from the paving, the paving is falling apart, falling into the garden beds. There's exposed aggie pipes that people just walk through there as a shortcut from their car and trip over. It's just dreadful. It's not very...

OUTCOME: TCCS contacted the caller and advised that TCCS will remediate the garden areas and remove the irrigation piping to avoid any future hazards to members of the public. This will be carried out as a priority.

Directorate: TCCS

Issue: Flooding in inner north. Why wasn’t a natural disaster declared and what steps have been taken to mitigate it happening again?

OUTCOME: The declaration of Natural Disasters in the ACT is the responsibility of ACT State Emergency Services (SES). TCCS’ role in these types of incidents is to act as a support agency to the SES. TCCS delivers a sump cleaning program that has targeted the inner north since the extreme weather event in February 2018. The program ensures that blockages in the stormwater network are minimised.  All flooding issues reported during the event are being investigated to identify the best course of corrective action. All Gross Pollution Traps (infrastructure that captures litter and debris in the stormwater system) have been fully cleaned.

OUTCOME: TCCS officer contacted caller to discuss speed signs on Norris Street in Chisolm. TCCS advised the caller that although there is no speed limit signs in the area, the 50 km/h default speed limit applies to Norris Street. Traffic conditions on the street have been investigated recently and recommended measures will be implemented in future programs. The caller also noted there was no speed signs on Goldstein Crescent and motorists entering from Isabella Drive tend to speed. The officer advised that Goldstein Crescent has a 60km/h speed limit and so should have speed signs at the entry. TCCS will inspect the site and replace the sign if missing.

Issue: Please chief minister. I am at my wits end dealing with the safety issues on Belconnen way. Again, this morning I saw primary school kids dodging speeding cars (easily doing 80kmph) whilst crossing the road.

OUTCOME: TCCS contacted the caller to discuss their safety concerns on Belconnen Way. The caller was concerned about the high speeds on Belconnen Way, and especially safety at the Belconnen Way/Springvale Drive and Belconnen Way/Shumack Street intersections. He said many children cross at these intersections and that it was a safety risk. TCCS advised that Belconnen Way was designed as an arterial road that transports large volumes of traffic and the allocated speed limit was appropriate for this section of road. TCCS conduct surveys regularly to monitor traffic conditions. TCCS is aware of the issues at the Belconnen Way/Springvale Drive intersection and was investigated recently. The recommended treatments will be implemented in future programs.

Directorate: Access Canberra

Issue: Why do tradies get to park illegally around wherever they are working? I just drove around Vernon circle and saw tradies utes parked on city hill. It seems to happen everywhere work is being done and often obstructs

OUTCOME: The caller was contacted and advised that Parking Operations has been enforcing parking rules in the area of concern and the City Rangers have also been informed to monitor the area for illegal parking practices in the urban open space area. The caller was informed of the Parking Operations risk and harm approach to enforcement in newer suburban areas which are still under construction.
The caller was also advised that Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) infringements are mailed to the vehicle owner rather than placed in the traditional yellow envelope.
The caller also mentioned dangerous parking practices around schools during drop off and pick up times. Parking Operations advised that Parking Operations is undertaking a schools enforcement program. School principals and the Education Department are notified of the up and coming enforcement activities for their school. This notification allows for an education program to be undertaken for parents, and assists to identify dangerous and illegal parking practices, before enforcement is undertaken.
