Drivers urged to check if their vehicles affected by airbag recall

Released 25/07/2017

Canberra drivers are being urged to check if their vehicle is a make and model affected by a safety recall of potentially unsafe airbags.

Since 2009, more than 2.3 million vehicles in Australia are subject to the recall of airbags made by Japanese manufacturer, Takata.

There are 60 makes of cars sold in Australia impacted including models of BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

Access Canberra Director of Community, Business and Transport Regulation Craig Simmons said at this time it is not known how many vehicles in the ACT may be affected.

He encouraged all Canberrans to check their vehicles and take action by contacting the manufacturer or dealer if impacted.

“This is an important safety recall and one that should not be ignored,” Mr Simmons said. “We know that affected airbags have lead to some catastrophic outcomes, including fatalities following accidents. Over time the airbags can degrade, again increasing the risk.

“If you have received a letter from your car’s manufacturer or retailer asking you to have your car’s airbag replaced, act on it as a priority.

Even if they have not received a letter from their vehicle manufacturer, Canberrans are encouraged to check their make and model of car against the list of cars with affected airbags fitted at: https://www.productsafety.gov.au/news/takata-airbag-recalls-affecting-australian-consumers. Nationally, 850,000 cars have had their airbags replaced through the recall. Further details on the recall can be found on the ACCC website at:  https://www.accc.gov.au/update/takata-airbag-recalls-your-consumer-rights
