This week check your car is safe: Takata airbag recall

Released 21/08/2017

Canberrans are urged to check that their vehicles are not impacted by the Takata airbag recall – as faulty airbags have led to serious injury and fatalities.

Access Canberra Director of Community, Business and Transport Regulation, Craig Simmons strongly encouraged Canberrans to take the few minutes to check the list of known vehicle makes and models affected (see list attached) and if their vehicle was listed, contact their manufacturer or dealer immediately. Access Canberra can also be contacted if the community has questions on 13 22 81.

“We know there are 60 makes of cars sold in Australia impacted by this recall including models of BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota,” Mr Simmons said.

“While members of the community with affected vehicles may have been contacted by their manufacturer or dealer we know that many Canberrans may have discarded, not received or ignored these letters.

“With airbags degrading over time I strongly encourage every Canberran to check the list and follow this up as a matter of high importance.”

Since 2009, more than 2.3 million vehicles in Australia are subject to the recall of airbags made by Japanese manufacturer, Takata. About 850,000 cars have had their airbags replaced through the recall.

“It is also known that some cars have already had their airbag replaced however some replacements also had problems causing them to degrade or were a similar airbag,” he said.

“Car manufacturers and dealers need to let their consumers know what the airbag is being replaced with and if it is likely to be the subject of another recall in the future.”

Mr Simmons also encouraged Canberra-based motor vehicle dealers and repairers to familiarise themselves with the list and the issue so they could also provide information to consumers.

“We all have a role to play in ensuring Canberrans are aware and informed of this important safety issue,” he concluded.  Further information can also be found here: https://www.productsafety.gov.au/news/takata-airbag-recalls-affecting-australian-consumers
