Improvement Notices issued on Calvary Hospital

Released 17/08/2018

WorkSafe ACT has issued four Improvement Notices on Calvary Hospital management in relation to the hospital’s Bullying and Harassment policies.

Following a referral from the Coroner’s Office, WorkSafe ACT over the past few months has investigated the adequacy of the Hospital’s Bullying and Harassment policies.

With full co-operation of the Hospital’s management the review has now been completed.

The four Improvement Notices relate to:

  • System reporting to separately identify bullying, harassment and psychological incidents
  • All new staff (clinical and non-clinical) to complete full mandatory induction training prior to commencing duty
  • Clinical staff to be trained in Human Resource practices, people management and supervisory duties
  • Update the Hospital’s work health and safety risk assessment so that it is specific to the Calvary site.

Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones said that Calvary management had fully co-operated with the investigation and had demonstrated a commitment to improvement.

“Already we have seen positive improvements made by Calvary management which will support a greater awareness, reporting and consistent response to issues of bullying and harassment should they arise,” he said.

“WorkSafe ACT will continue to monitor the response to the Improvement Notices to ensure ongoing systemic improvements at Calvary Hospital and will continue to work cooperatively with Calvary management.

“All workers, regardless of industry or workplace, can rightly expect a safe workplace, including from psychological injury.”
