LAKE TUGGERANONG REOPENS TODAY

Released 03/05/2019

The Environment Protection Authority has today issued notice that Lake Tuggeranong is now OPEN and that the Extreme Alert Level for blue-green algae is no longer in place.

Lake Tuggeranong is now open for both primary and secondary contact with algae monitoring results confirming algae levels are now LOW.

This follows the lake being closed for primary-contact recreation (recreation that involves whole-body water contact or submersion of the head such as swimming, diving, water skiing and windsurfing), since December 2018.

These results follow the cooler weather conditions experienced over the past few weeks. The community should always look for algae warnings signs which indicate the current algae alert level. Warning signs are located at public access areas.

The ACT Government is actively working to better understand blue green algae outbreaks in Lake Tuggeranong and how they could be prevented in the future.

Two water quality research projects are currently being carried out at the lake by the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra as a part of ACT Healthy Waterways.

The research complements our investment in water quality infrastructure, including new wetlands and rain gardens across Canberra. The wetlands and rain gardens reduce the flow of pollutants from the catchments entering our lakes.
