Playful Endeavour returning to Glebe Park - with a big pile of dirt

Released 27/09/2019

Wheels for a car one minute, a seat in a rocket ship the next – Playful Endeavour is back these school holidays to bring creative play back to Glebe Park.

At the Playful Endeavour loose-parts playground, children can run wild with imagination where found and manufactured materials become whatever they want them to be, encouraging creativity and social interaction.

City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said activities such as Playful Endeavour were an important part of the Authority’s spring program and a crucial element to making Civic a place for all ages.

“The key to creating a successful public space is ensuring it can be appealing and engaging to a wide range of people,” Mr Snow said.

“With more and more young families living within the city precinct, it’s important that we have suitable spaces and activities for children’s exercise and play. We also want to show that Civic can be a great destination for young families and children to visit, and Playful Endeavour is an important part of that.”

While Playful Endeavour in Glebe Park has a wide range of materials to spark the imagination such as hoops, poles, pipes, crates, ropes and tyres, this time there is also a big pile of dirt for children to experiment with, to create anything from sculptures and toy car tracks, to famous backyard mud pies.

“Loose-parts play encourages open-ended, imaginative, self-directed play, develops interpersonal and cooperation skills, and is a great idea for a family activity in the school holidays,” Mr Snow said.

“Our other activities for spring in the city will also still be running such as the magical Garden of Enchantment in Garema Place, with Lucy Sparkles and Friends providing face painting and musical performances.

“For families looking to go on an outing with the kids and try something different, I encourage you to visit Civic this school holidays and enjoy the range of activities we have on offer.”

Playful Endeavour is again being operated by Green Hat Workshop, which hosts loose-parts playgrounds around the country.

Playful Endeavour is a free activity and will run from 28 September – 11 October 2019 in Glebe Park.
