Stop, collaborate and listen … ice is back with a brand new location

Released 11/06/2019

Ice skating in the city is back again, this time in Civic Square, as Wintervention returns in 2019, so dress warm, get outside and enjoy the winter experience in Canberra.

This year the focus of Wintervention has moved from Garema Place to Civic Square, where a larger ice skating rink, accompanied by food and beverage operators, will be in operation from 5-21 July.

The Civic Square based festival will also feature a three-day opening event featuring food and market stalls from 5-7 July and live entertainment on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The opening weekend, from Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July, will feature local art and craft producers, food and drink vendors, and entertainment.

City Renewal Authority chief executive officer Malcolm Snow said the move to Civic Square provided a new, fresh look for the festival.

“Open-air ice skating has proven to be a very popular activity over the past six years and we think Canberrans will love the new set-up in Civic Square,” Mr Snow said.

“Canberra is fortunate to have four distinct seasons and Wintervention is our way of encouraging people to embrace the colder weather, which is something that many Australian cities don’t get to experience.

“Bring the kids for a skate, grab a hot drink and something to eat, listen to some live music, watch a ‘stars on ice’ performance and enjoy the winter Canberra weather.”

The new Wintervention location will feature a larger ice skating rink, picnic tables and seating, food and drink vendors, entertainment (Friday to Sunday), a life-size snow globe to have your photo taken in, and new festive lighting.

“Moving to the larger space of Civic Square has given us the flexibility to do things a little differently this year,” Mr Snow said.

“There will be more room to skate on a bigger ice skating rink than previous years, as well as more room to sit, sip and shop during our opening weekend event.”

Ice skating tickets start from $12 a session.
