Refreshed ReNewYou returns to the city centre in September

Released 27/08/2020

Free lunchtime fitness and activity classes will return to the city centre from Tuesday 1 September, as the City Renewal Authority’s ReNewYou program restarts for 2020.

Like many activities across Canberra, the ReNewYou program was halted prematurely in March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. But with restrictions easing the program returns - with a few COVID-safe tweaks - to again provide free, weekly, healthy activity classes in the city centre’s public spaces.

Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the activities in the program, starting with Zumba, would change regularly to provide a variety of opportunities for people to be outside and get active.

“There are lots of great public spaces in our city that can be used in a safe, physically distanced way, and our ReNewYou program aims to help people in the city centre use those to get a little bit healthier,” Mr Snow said.

“Exercising and staying healthy is as important now as ever and this program gives people an extra opportunity to get out in the fresh air and be a bit more active.

“Whether you’re working in the city, or a city resident working from home, or can just make some spare time over lunch one day a week, ReNewYou is a great way to fit some more healthy activity into your life.

“The program starts with Zumba in Garema Place in September before bootcamp in Glebe Park in October and Yoga in City Walk in November.”

The sessions will be run using COVID-safe practices, including physical distancing and good hygiene.

“We will be taking all the appropriate steps to ensure the safety of participants,” Mr Snow said.

“Participants will need to register ahead of the sessions so that we can ensure we have enough space for physical distancing and also that we have details for contract tracing.

“There will be no sharing of equipment and participants will need to bring their own water bottles, towels and mats (for yoga). People will be encouraged to sanitise their hands when necessary.

“And of course, people should not come if they are unwell.”

ReNewYou is funded by the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy.
