City improvements to bring the new integrated transport network to life

Released 09/11/2018

Canberrans will see a difference in the heart of the city as we bring the new integrated transport network to life with a modern interchange for pedestrians, cyclists as well as bus and light rail commuters. Work starts this Saturday 10 November to connect the light rail stop with an extended City Bus Station along Alinga Street West.

By getting the City Bus Station extension underway now we will be ready for the new transport network in 2019, with light rail and more frequent bus services in a modern interchange.

Construction is planned to take place over two days, starting at 7 am Saturday 10 November and ending by
10 pm Sunday 11 November 2018. Road crews will repair the road surface on Alinga Street West, making it ready for new line marking. We will also be removing and repositioning some street furniture like bike racks, bins and seats.

Alinga Street between Northbourne Avenue and Marcus Clarke Street will be closed to traffic during this time. New five minute parking will open between Moore Street and Marcus Clarke Street from  Sunday 11 November 2018. Parking, including disabled parking, will remain on Moore Street. The existing car parking along Alinga Street West will remain in place until Friday 23 November 2018, at which time it will be closed permanently.

New linemarking will commence the following week.

Buses will begin operating on Alinga Street West from Saturday 24 November 2018, while the street will remain open to all forms of traffic. We are also designing new shelters to meet the heritage requirements of the area and will install the shelters in mid 2019.

Location and timing of works

Works are planned to be carried out from 7 am Saturday 10 November to 10 pm 11 Sunday November 2018, with further minor works in the following weeks. Additional works will be undertaken in mid 2019 to install bus shelters that meet the heritage requirements of the area. Other construction works are already underway on Northbourne Avenue between London Circuit and Rudd Streets.

Location and timing of road closures

  • Alinga Street will be closed to all traffic from 7 am Saturday 10 November to
    10 pm Sunday 11 November 2018.
  • Pedestrians access will remain open, but access will be affected. There will be detours in place.

Effects on traffic

  • Delays are expected.
  • Road users and pedestrians are asked to be mindful of the changed traffic arrangements and to seek an alternate route where possible.
  • Access will be maintained to Odgers Lane for local businesses.
