Library volunteers to be thanked for keeping community connected

Released 02/11/2017

Libraries ACT will today honour its dedicated volunteers who help to deliver the range of services that are used by many sectors of the Canberra community.

“We have approximately 100 volunteers who make themselves available to help enhance some of our library services,” Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little said.

“These include helping to record Canberra’s history at the ACT Heritage Library, facilitating English conversation classes to people learning English as a second language and also assisting with the Library’s Book Roundabout second hand book sale.”

Libraries ACT’s biggest volunteer base is with the Home Library Service, designed for those who are aged, ill, physically unable to get about, or physically unable to handle print material. Currently 43 volunteers with Libraries ACT assist in this way helping to ensure library members remain connected.

English conversation classes provided by Libraries ACT are also successful, due to its volunteer tutors. Groups meet at library branches for free sessions to help improve English skills and cultural understanding in a range of formal or informal settings.

A dedicated band of volunteers also sort photos and other material at the ACT Heritage Library, sharing their knowledge of our city to help record it for the future.

“Opportunities like today’s ceremony are an important one to acknowledge and thank our volunteer members who year-after-year continue to engage with the community and promote the pleasure of reading with the variety of library services.

“I would like to thank all of them for their continued commitment in being with the Libraries ACT team,”
Ms Little said.

The special event will commence from 10 am today, Thursday 2 November 2017 at the Canberra Southern Cross Club, Mariner Place, Yarralumla.
