Plan your trip this weekend on the light rail corridor

Released 15/09/2017

All Canberrans should consider traffic impacts from light rail construction on Northbourne Avenue and Flemington Road when planning travel in and around the area over the weekend.

Macarthur and Wakefield Avenue intersection closure

On Northbourne Avenue there will be out-of-hours works occurring over the weekend at the intersection of Macarthur and Wakefield Avenues. The intersection will be closed for a 54 hour period from 8 pm tonight, Friday 15 September until 4 am on Monday 18 September 2017.

Work to install stormwater drainage and underground services will be occurring, in addition to preparatory work for the laying of the track slab.

Right turns will not be permitted from Northbourne Avenue into Macarthur or Wakefield Avenues. Traffic from Macarthur and Wakefield Avenues will not be allowed to cross the intersection and will only be permitted to turn left. There will be no changes for motorists travelling through the intersection along Northbourne Avenue in a north or south bound direction, other than a reduced number of lanes in each direction. Detours will be in place to divert traffic including buses. Traffic management will be in place and highly visible over the weekend. Road users are encouraged to observe traffic management signs and personnel.

Due to the nature of the construction work, some of the activities will be noisy. Canberra Metro will limit the noise where possible and undertake as much of the noisy work as possible during daytime hours.

Access to Mitchell Resource Management Centre

Delays are being experienced outside the Mitchell Resource Management Centre (MRMC) on weekends due to road works. Traffic has been restricted to a single left hand turn in and left hand turn out of the MRMC onto Flemington Road southbound traffic. Depending on weather conditions, these measures will be in place until late September.

The MRMC has recently being experiencing higher volumes of visitors and traffic on weekends. Canberrans planning a trip to the MRMC this month are urged to consider using the Transfer Station located at Mugga Lane, or alternatively allow extra time and avoid visiting the MRMC during its peak periods of 10.30 am to 4 pm where possible. People travelling from Gungahlin along Flemington Road towards Mitchell are asked to detour using Well Station Drive prior to the entrance to the MRRC to assist in alleviating potential delays.  A Vehicle Management Sign (VMS) will be in place encouraging use of this alternative route.
