The ACT Government wishes to advise that Dickson Library will be closed from tomorrow, Friday 28 September 2018, until further notice whilst some further building works are undertaken.
Rectification works in the library are continuing following damage from a wet weather event earlier in the year. The library has been partially opened to allow the works to be undertaken while providing locals with limited access to library services. This full closure is required to safely and efficiently progress these works. The library will then recommence partial operations.
Subsequent investigations have found asbestos present in the inactive bathrooms in the subfloor which are not accessible to the public. Work will be undertaken to have this material safely removed.
Like most buildings built before 1990 in Canberra, materials containing asbestos were used in the library’s construction. The library has an asbestos management plan in place and these materials are safe if undisturbed.
Return chutes at Dickson will be closed. Please return items to another branch, or renew them online.
Libraries ACT apologises for any inconvenience caused. Alternative arrangements are being made for people who have booked a community room at the Dickson Library and return and request dates will be extended until Friday 5 October 2018.
Library members and visitors are encouraged to visit another branch, with the closest branches located in Civic, Gungahlin and Belconnen. All other branches remain open and are operating as per normal opening hours.
Alternatively, library members can make use of all online services at www.library.act.gov.au including searching, reserving and renewing items, as well as downloading eBooks, eAudio, digital magazines and music using their membership number and PIN.
