Hop up! Wriggle over! Come and enjoy October [with Libraries ACT]!

Released 03/10/2018

The weather’s warming up, the magpies are stretching their wings and Libraries ACT encourages you to take advantage of their cool and magpie free interiors by participating in the new programs and events on offer this October.

“We made it through September and now in the midst of spring we’ve got a brand new program to excite our members,” said Director Libraries ACT Vanessa Little.

For the first time in Australia, Woden Library will be the proud hosts of the Sharing Stories Exhibition. The Exhibition will showcase children’s books which were selected for an Honour List by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

“We are incredibly proud to be welcoming the Sharing Stories Exhibition to Canberra. The Exhibition will be on display at Woden Library from October 2 - 20 2018 and will feature 191 wonderful children’s books from 70 countries around the world as well as a collection of Australian children’s books from the last 60 years.

“Throughout October we have a number of themed activities and events to complement the Exhibition including story time, craft activities and a special event, Hop up! Wriggle over! And enjoy at Woden Library for all ages on October 20. Families are invited to come and enjoy readings, original artworks, story books and more by well-known Australian authors and illustrators Elizabeth Honey, Alison Lester and Bob Graham.”

Libraries ACT always put together an entertaining and educative school holiday program and this time it’s no different.

“Libraries provide an opportunity for children to do so much more than sit and read a book. Our workshops and programs are a chance to think outside the box, have new experiences and be hands on. We still have places available in a number of our programs including Loose Parts Play on various dates in Civic where creativity and innovation are encouraged. Children can get their hands moving and design and build something special to take home.”

October is also a month for author talks with five authors and six opportunities to hear them.

“We’re hosting a number of authors this month including author of Can you feel it?, Pauline Findlay, author of The Year of the Farmer, Rosalie Ham and Alice Nelson, author of The Children’s House. Each of these novels are filled with complexities, hope and love and will grip readers from cover to cover. Come along and listen to the authors delve into their novels and writing process.

“I encourage everyone to take a look at our program of events for October. If you’re not yet a member, consider visiting your local library where our friendly staff will be happy to show you around and talk about our services. We look forward to seeing you at one of our branches soon,” concluded Ms Little.

All Libraries ACT programs and events are free, however bookings are essential as places are limited. For more information on the variety of programs and events and to book, visit www.library.act.gov.au or call 6205 9000.
