The National Multicultural Festival gets underway tomorrow with three days of family-friendly fun to be enjoyed by all, and Libraries ACT is hosting a number of free events at Civic Library celebrating cultures from all over the world.
Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little, said events would include a range of exciting activities to celebrate languages including bilingual story times and a special story reading with TV Presenter Poh Ling Yeow of her children’s book, Sweet Petite.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with CMAG, ACT Government Child and Family Centres, and others as part of the Festival’s Children’s Sanctuary to celebrate the melting pot of international culture we have here in the ACT,” Ms Little said.
“Families are invited to the Children’s Sanctuary at Civic Library where they can take part in bilingual story times and learn about the array of language resources they can access as a member of Libraries ACT.
“Hindi storytelling will take place on Saturday 17 February from 11 am to 11.15 am and Bengali storytelling will follow from 1.30 pm to 1.45 pm.
“We are also very excited to be welcoming TV presenter and cookbook and children’s author, Poh Ling Yeow to Civic Library to do a special reading of her children’s story, Sweet Petite on Saturday 17 February from 3.15 pm to 3.30 pm.”
For those unable to make the Festival, Libraries ACT has a number of events throughout the coming months that continue the celebration of culture.
“We encourage everyone to celebrate International Mother Language Day with us at Tuggeranong Library where we’ll be hosting Ngunnawal man, Richie Allan, on Wednesday 21 February 2018 from 1 pm to 2 pm. Richie will lead an interactive program for children aged three to five years old where they will learn some words from the local Aboriginal language, one of the oldest living cultures in the world,” Ms Little said.
“We are also holding three more bilingual storytellings in March, April and May. If parents would like their children to experience a language other than English, we encourage them to book their child a place in one of these programs.”
Details of upcoming bilingual storytellings are as follows:
- 15 March 2018 10.30 am – 11 am: Hindi
- 12 April 2018 10.30 am – 11 am: Bengali
- 17 May 2018 10.30 am – 11 am: Mandarin
