On our way to creating a safer, more vibrant and accessible Gungahlin

Released 13/07/2018

Gungahlin’s town centre and road network are undergoing a transformation that, together with light rail, will revitalise Gungahlin and make it one of the most sought after communities to live, work and socialise in.

Despite the wet weather experienced in June, significant progress has been made over the last six weeks on the first stage of the duplication of Gundaroo Drive. Drivers will have noticed two lanes are now open between Nari Street and Gungahlin Drive heading towards Belconnen, as works progress along the length of the duplication ahead of completion of all stage one works later this year.

This is one of a number of upgrades in and around the town centre including:

  • the duplication of Horse Park Drive between the Federal Highway and Katherine Avenue (west)
  • an extension of Ernest Cavanagh Street between Hinder Street and Manning Clark Crescent
  • construction of a new road, Camilleri Way, from Manning Clark Crescent to Gungahlin Place
  • reconstruction of Hibberson Street to a one way shared zone from Gungahlin Place to Gozzard Street.

“The ACT Government is creating a safer, more vibrant, and better connected town centre for the people of Gungahlin,” said Acting Executive Director City Place and Infrastructure, Ben McHugh.

“There is a lot happening concurrently across Gungahlin and the ACT Government understands the inconvenience to residents and commuters, particularly those local to Gungahlin, whilst these works are underway.

The duplication of Horse Park Drive is progressing well. The community will have noticed that works have started on the final section between Well Station Drive and the Federal Highway with earthworks commencing last month. The traffic lights at the Mulligans Flat Road, Katherine Avenue and Francis Forde Boulevard intersections are all now operational.

Earlier this year the extension of Ernest Cavanagh Street started. Bulk earthworks are nearing completion and there will be temporary road closures in coming weeks to allow for construction of a trench for multiple utility services across Kate Crace Street.

The majority of works are now finished on Camilleri Way with the road expected to be open to traffic in the coming months. Following its opening, construction of the four way signalised intersection at Kate Crace Street and The Valley Avenue will progress. The intersection will be temporarily closed whilst works are underway with traffic diverted to Camilleri Way.

Hibberson Street is being transformed into a more people-friendly area with improved landscaping and more places to sit and relax with family and friends. Substantial progress is being made on the project with the pedestrian crossing leading to Kmart expected to be finished in the coming weeks ahead of upgrades to the Gozzard Street intersection commencing.
