Songs and sales take to the stage at Libraries ACT this weekend

Released 19/03/2018

The Libraries ACT book sale returns to Tuggeranong on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March 2018 with books, magazines and more up for grabs.

Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little, said the success of the previous book sale events has been encouraging and reflective of the appetite for reading material in the Canberra community.

“We’ve been overjoyed by the positive reactions to our book sales over the last two years and pleased to announce another sale,” said Ms Little.

“Approximately 60,000 new items are added to the Libraries ACT collection each year and these book sales help to ensure we have the required space to continue to provide fresh and new material for the community.

“We’ve got thousands of items in good condition going on sale this weekend, with the revenue from the sales going back into supporting literacy in Canberra through targeted Libraries ACT programs.

“Some items for sale are in Vietnamese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. We also have car service and workshop manuals,” Ms Little said.

The Libraries ACT book sale commences from 10 am – 4 pm Saturday and 12 pm – 3 pm on Sunday at the Tuggeranong branch on Cowlishaw Street. Prices will vary with a variety of magazines for sale for 20 cents, picture books, junior fiction and junior non-fiction at $1.00, fiction and large print for $2.00 and $3.00 for adult non fiction books. Only cash payments will be accepted.

Also being held this weekend is a special concert event to celebrate community at the Gungahlin Library on Sunday. Ms Little said she was excited to bring together three of Canberra’s community choirs for a time of community, kinship and connection.

“Community choirs play a special role in bringing people together, creating a sense of belonging and improving mental and emotional wellbeing. Libraries ACT is excited to provide a platform for three of Canberra’s fabulous community choirs to belt out some tunes and bring joy to our community,” said Ms Little.

The three choirs entertaining the crowd will be:

  • Qwire: The Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire
  • Canberra Community Voices
  • Mixtape Chorus.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing some musical spirit to Gungahlin Library. Our libraries are not purely places to borrow books and sit and study. We offer a range of resources for the enjoyment of our members including our vast e-Resources collection. If music is your passion, become a library member and you can download and stream music for free.

“I encourage the community to join us on Sunday for wonderful musical event with your fellow Canberrans,” Ms Little concluded.

The concert is suitable for all ages and will be held from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm on Sunday 25 March. Tickets are free, however bookings are essential as places are limited. For more information, visit www.library.act.gov.au or call 6205 9000.
