Escape the summer heat and read a book

Released 15/01/2019

It is another hot summer day and with the extreme heat conditions in the Nation’s Capital this week, Canberrans are being encouraged to escape the heat at their local public library.

Come on in and enjoy access to free books, DVDs, magazines, music downloads, ebooks, online tutoring, wifi, programs and events, and of course some air conditioning.

Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little, said the library is a great place to take the kids on a hot day with a wide range of free programs on offer including regular Giggle and Wiggle events and Story Time.

“We also have the Curious Creature: book character hunt, where a range of curious creatures have been hidden in the library for children to find. There is also a number of Bilingual Story Time events in Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Farsi and Vietnamese,” Ms Little said.

“Of course your local public library is also a great place to simply unwind in the cool with a good book. Water coolers are available at most libraries, with cool jugs of water available at the rest, so you can get hydrated while you relax your mind.

“There are also great cafes at Gungahlin and Woden if you feel like a cold drink.

“There are nine different locations across the ACT and I encourage Canberrans to visit their local public library to escape the heat and discover all there is on offer.”

Full details of all activities can be found on the Libraries ACT website at www.library.act.gov.au or by calling 6205 9000.

Other public places community members can go to escape the heat indoors, include local shopping centres, cinemas, museums and galleries to name a few.
