Gundaroo Drive Stage 2 duplication works reach first major milestone

Released 14/02/2019

Road users are advised that a westbound traffic switch will take place this Friday 15 February 2019 on Gundaroo Drive where Stage 2 duplication works have been underway between Nudurr Drive and the Barton Highway.

“The second stage of the duplication of Gundaroo Drive began in May 2018. The project team has been working between Nudurr Drive and the Barton Highway to relocate utilities, duplicate the existing bridge and construct the new lanes,” said Executive Branch Manager Infrastructure Delivery at Transport Canberra and City Services, Jeremy Smith.

“This traffic switch will allow the project team safe access to construct the new, widened median and to widen the existing roundabout at Abena Avenue.”

The second stage of the Gundaroo Drive duplication includes:

  • duplication of 2.45 kilometres of Gundaroo Drive between Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway to provide an additional lane in each direction
  • off-road shared use paths to improve safety conditions for cyclists and pedestrians
  • LED streetlights to improve streetlight efficiency
  • improved bus facilities
  • noise walls to reduce traffic noise for nearby residents
  • on-road cycle lanes to improve safety conditions for cyclists.

“Westbound traffic (Belconnen bound) will be moved onto the new carriageway between Nudurr Drive and the Barton Highway whilst eastbound traffic (Gungahlin bound) will remain as is. Traffic will still be one way in each direction, leaving the two lanes on either side of the median closed to ensure safety of our workers.

“The next milestone will be the opening of all four lanes in this section and start of work between Gungahlin Drive and Nudurr Drive. Whilst traffic is being moved onto the new carriageway, we do advise that the final layer of resurfacing will be carried out simultaneously on the entire length of the new carriageway (Gungahlin Drive to the Barton Highway) prior to project completion which is on track for mid 2020,” concluded Mr Smith.

Location and timing of changed traffic arrangements

A westbound traffic switch on Gundaroo Drive between Nudurr Drive and the Barton Highway is expected to take place on Friday 15 February 2019. In the event of unexpected delays, including inclement weather, road users should take note of roadside signage which will advise them of the new date. Road users are advised to follow the directions of traffic controllers and road signage and take note of reduced speed limits.
