Light rail launch update: More than 10,000 passengers enjoy light rail

Released 20/04/2019

Over 10,000 people have already taken a trip on Canberra’s light rail, celebrating the first day of operations at today’s celebratory community event.

“It’s fantastic to see so many people out enjoying the sunshine, live music, roving entertainment and, of course, riding the light rail,” said Meghan Oldfield, Transport Canberra Light Rail Project Director.

Current wait time for travel on the light rail at the City and Gungahlin terminus is around 15-25 minutes.

“While there is a bit of a wait to ride the rail, the sun is shining and there is plenty to come see and do. Please remember to be sun smart and bring your hat, sunscreen and water.”

Ms Oldfield said that Canberrans are in great spirits, and have been well behaved, with no major incidents to report.

Free travel on the light rail and festivities will continue until 4pm today. Light rail will continue to operate following the event.

Remember you will be able to travel for free for a month from 29 April across the new network.
