If you grew up in Canberra then chances are you spent time at Birrigai Outdoor School. Now the ACT Government is giving one lucky applicant the chance to make it their home, with a position now available as the live-in gardens and grounds maintenance facilities officer.

Birrigai Principal, Peter Kent, said the position is great opportunity for a driven, hardworking and flexible person who has a love of the great outdoors. This is an identified position and only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“One of the requirements for this role is to be on site at Birrigai, which is about 2km from the Tidbinbilla nature reserve on Tidbinbilla Road and about 14km from Gordon in the Tuggeranong Valley,” Mr Kent said.

“This means you really do get to live out in nature, with all the great benefits that entails. The accommodation on site is a family home, so there is space for your family too.

“Birrigai offers a range of outdoor activities, and cultural and environmental education programs to ACT, regional, and national preschool to Year 12 students from both the Government and non-government education sectors.

“It also provides services to a range of community and corporate groups. Birrigai is able to offer onsite accommodation for up to 200 people with self or fully catered options.

“As part of this role you’d be required to perform basic work to maintain Birrigai’s infrastructure, including the repair and maintenance of a wide range of building and grounds infrastructure and equipment.

“You would also carry out a wide range of gardening tasks; including mowing, shrub bed maintenance, planting, watering, weed control, tree surgery and cleaning of paved areas. You would be a Jack or Jill of all trades.

“We want applicants who are highly motivated and responsible, because Birrigai runs day and night, and we will need someone on the ground if there is a need for emergency maintenance.”
