$800,000 to support community motorsport in the ACT

Released 25/07/2017

Eight ACT community motorsport organisations will share more than $800,000 in funding through the Community Motorsport Development Program.

The Community Motorsport Development Program is one component of the ACT Labor Government's $8 million Motorsport Fund; established to promote and grow participation in local motorsport activities.

The Fund is also part of the Government's Active 2020 strategy, which aims to increase participation in sport and recreation activities in the ACT, develop elite sporting opportunities, and ensure Canberrans continue to have access to sustainable and quality sporting infrastructure.

In 2011, the first round of the Community Motorsport Development Program provided clubs with funding to undertake a variety of business planning projects to assist them in establishing a strong and viable footing.

Today's announcement builds on the previous round and provides these clubs with funding to develop their facilities and event capabilities.

Funding is also being provided for a variety of projects including the establishment of a specialised trials riding venue, timing equipment for rally clubs, and connecting electricity to the ACT Speedway venue. Clubs to receive funding under the program are:

* ACT Motorcycle Club,

* Trials Club of Canberra,

* Brindabella Motor Sports Club,

* National Capital Motorsports Club,

* Southern District Motorsport Club,

* Canberra Kart Racing Club,

* Dual Sport Motorcycle Riders Association, and

* Canberra Bulls.

The Community Motorsport Development Program is part of the Government's targeted investments in the ACT's sports and tourism sectors, aimed at supporting local jobs and the economy while delivering the services that make Canberra the most active and healthy community in Australia.

The ACT Labor Government recognises that community-based motorsport has long been an important part of the social and sporting fabric of Canberra and we are committed to supporting these clubs into the future.
