Big leap for local world leader in renewable energy

Released 24/08/2017 - Joint media release

Joint media release: Chief Minster Andrew Barr MLA and Shane Rattenbury MLA

Congratulations to Canberra-based renewable energy company Windlab that was successfully listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) yesterday.

Listing on the ASX is a huge milestone for any company. Through its successful initial public offering, Windlab is demonstrating Canberra’s leadership in the renewable energy sector on the international stage.

Windlab is a great Canberra success story, applying science to develop, construct and operate better wind energy projects around the world.

Over its 13 year history, Windlab has had touchpoints with many of our programs and support networks in the ACT including:

  • winning multiple categories in the ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards, including ACT Exporter of the Year in 2013 and 2014;
  • joining ACT Government trade missions to foreign markets, including the USA;
  • taking part in the International Businesses Planning Competition that the Government runs in partnership with the ANU;
  • working with the ACT’s public and private high schools to raise awareness of renewable energy;
  • delivering Australia’s only master’s course in wind development, in partnership with the Government and the ANU’s Energy Change Institute; and
  • managing two of Canberra’s five wind farms under the Government’s highly successful renewable energy reverse auctions.

Windlab was established to commercialise technology developed by the CSIRO, and is evidence of Canberra’s maturing innovation ecosystem and support for word-class high-growth technology businesses.

My government is focussed on continuing to create the right business environment and using our competitive strengths to accelerate innovation and investment in Canberra.

Quotes to be attributed to Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury:

“Windlab is a great example what can be achieved through our collaboration with industry to foster clean energy innovation.

“Clean energy is the industry of the future. Windlab’s successful public listing is proof-positive of the exciting investment opportunities that are being created in the ACT.”

“We will continue to support local innovation to ensure we diversify Canberra’s economy and help more businesses make their mark, particularly as we move towards a city that is 100% powered by renewable electricity by 2020.”
