Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund to support CBR’s most vulnerable

Released 02/07/2018

I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund, which will provide targeted support for our community to deliver help where it is most needed.

Canberra has established a reputation as Australia’s most inclusive city—a place where we strive to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We already have the highest rate of volunteering in the country and have a strong social conscience.

We believe the Government has a role to play in providing opportunities for local charities and community groups to access financial support, which will result in better service delivery for those in the Canberra community that need it most.

The ACT Government is investing $5 million as seed funding to kick-start a long term commitment to our local charities and community sector to support their incredible work and also explore innovative solutions to meet community needs.

Local philanthropic group Hands Across Canberra has been nominated as the administer of the fund. Hands Across Canberra is a trusted not-for-profit organisation with strong networks in our community, and has developed a reputation for supporting a wide variety of causes and local charity organisations.

Hands Across Canberra Chair, Diane Kargas Bray AM said this community investment provides the start of a perpetual fund to ensure we have the ability to support those who need it most into the future.

“This gift to the Canberra community is an amazing recognition of the difference we can make if we all work together,” Ms Bray said.

“The success of Hands Across Canberra has demonstrated the good will in our community, and we believe that the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund will encourage an even higher level of philanthropy locally.”

This fund demonstrates that this Government will continue to support Canberra’s most vulnerable people as our city continues to grow.
