Royal Canberra National Poultry Show & Olympiad a Winner

Released 08/06/2012

Minister for Education and Training, Dr Chris Bourke, today opened the Royal Canberra National Poultry Show at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC).

"The Poultry Show will run over the Queen's birthday long weekend, Friday 8 to Sunday 10 June 2012. This year it is also the National Poultry Olympiad, held in Canberra every four years with over 5000 exhibits, ," Dr Bourke said.

"The Olympiad attracts four times as many birds as the annual show and is a great opportunity to see some of the best birds from across Australia at EPIC.

"The ACT Government has had ongoing involvement with the National Poultry Show and has this year provided a grant of $104,000 to purchase and construct 1000 new poultry cages for the event and future poultry shows.

"The birds' welfare is also in the forefront of the minds of the many bird fanciers and the new cages will assist with this," Dr Bourke said.

Dr Bourke said the ACT Government is a strong supporter of the poultry industry and improving animal welfare.

"The ACT Government has actively worked to strengthen regulations governing the keeping and inspecting of birds in multi-cage commercial environments. ACT Government agencies, including schools and hospitals, also source and use non-cage eggs.

"I wish all the participants luck in this year's show and hope to see everyone back in Canberra for the next National Poultry Olympiad in 2016," Dr Bourke said.
