A one-night Fringe Festival will be held alongside the 2013 National Multicultural Festival, ACT Arts Minister Joy Burch announced today.
Ms Burch said the ACT Government will soon call for Expressions of Interest for a Creative Producer to curate the Fringe event, with $20,000 on the table to deliver an exciting, alternative artistic program alongside the three-day Multicultural Festival in February.
"This is an exciting opportunity to showcase a colourful sector of Canberra's arts community alongside the biggest event in Canberra's CBD," Ms Burch said.
"The Multicultural Festival has gone from strength to strength, and Canberra's Centenary is an ideal time to bring back a very popular event."
Ms Burch encouraged Canberra artists with a passion for bold artistic productions to put their hand up for the role of Creative Producer. The Fringe event will be held on the biggest night of the Multicultural Festival, Saturday 9 February 2013.
"Art should inspire and challenge us, as well as entertain us. I want to see a program that celebrates the diversity of our arts community and that caters to a young adult – and young at heart – audience."
artsACT will work with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, which runs the Multicultural Festival, and the Creative Producer to support the running of a Fringe event that complements the Multicultural Festival.
"The Government is committed to supporting access to the arts for persons of all ages, and a free event in the CBD that is aimed at young people achieves this. The success of the Government-supported You Are Here Festival shows that there is strong interest for alternative arts."
Ms Burch said the co-location of the Fringe event with the Multicultural Festival will allow for the infrastructure and amenities to be incorporated into the Festival's preparations.
Ms Burch said she wanted to see the return of the vibrancy and experimental edge that the Fringe Festival used to bring to the National Multicultural Festival until 2009, when the Festival was restructured from a two-week to a three-day event.
"artsACT will be calling for Expressions of Interest later this month, and I urge Canberra artists to consider how they can be a part of this exciting event."
