ACT crews to assist in NSW weather crisis

Released 21/04/2015

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Joy Burch has today wished crews well from the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) who will depart for NSW tomorrow to assist their colleagues in the weather emergency.

“Very strong winds and heavy sustained rainfall have kept emergency crews busy in parts of NSW over the past few days,” Ms Burch said.

“Tomorrow, 22 ACTSES volunteers and one staff member will depart for a three day deployment in either Northern Sydney Region or the Hunter Region to help relieve some of the NSW SES crews who have worked around the clock.

“ACTSES volunteers will be tasked to carry out a range of duties with the flood and storm response to help NSW communities recover from this weather emergency.

“Our thoughts are with the residents of these towns who have been impacted greatly and also with the families who have tragically been affected with the loss of loved ones.

“The call for help into NSW is nothing new. Staff and volunteers from the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACT ESA) regularly provide assistance to other jurisdictions when required just as we too welcome support from interstate in our own emergency situations.”

ACTSES crews were sent to the Hunter Region in 2007 following wet weather and to Queensland in 2011 after Cyclone Yasi. Earlier this year, ACT Rural Fire Service crews were deployed to Western Australia to fight fires.

“Operations like this is what our ACTSES crews are trained for and work so well at. Locally, the ACTSES has been kept busy responding to 61 calls for help since 9am yesterday following the windy conditions. This of course could have been much worse if weather conditions had deteriorated to the lengths of that in NSW.”

The deployment will be briefed at the ACTESA Headquarters building tomorrow at 6.30am before departing.
