ACT to send emergency personnel to WA

The ACT will send 18 emergency personnel to Western Australia to assist in the fire emergency, Minister for Police and Emergency Services Joy Burch said today.

"The ACT has received a formal request from the Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to help fight fires and provide other emergency support in the O'Sullivan and Lower Hotham fires in the south-west of the state," Ms Burch said.

"A total of 18 staff and volunteers from the ACT Rural Fire Service, ACT Fire & Rescue, ACT Ambulance Service and the ACT State Emergency Service will leave the ACT tomorrow, ready to begin operations on Sunday 8 February, 2015.

"This work will include personnel in the Incident Management Teams providing support roles to fire operations and also on the ground in the roles of Divisional Commander, Sector Leader, specialist chainsaw operators and intensive care paramedics.

"During times of crisis, emergency crews from other jurisdictions support one another and offer to send resources. Canberrans should be proud of the work our emergency services staff and volunteers do in protecting the ACT and assisting in other areas of the country.

"I wish them well during their deployment and also thank the employers of these specialist volunteers for releasing them to assist in the crisis."

The crew will leave from Canberra Airport tomorrow at 7.15am for a five day deployment, returning to the ACT on Friday 13 February, 2015. Further assistance during the fire emergency in Western Australia may also be requested.
