Partner performs CPR and saves a life

Released 27/02/2015

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Joy Burch MLA today highlighted the importance of having first aid knowledge, following an incident that occurred on Boxing Day last year.

“Being aware of how to deliver first aid to a loved one or member of the community at any time really can be the difference between life and death,” Ms Burch said.

Robert Brice and his partner Judi Lopez were horse riding along Kambah Pool Road in Kambah when Mr Brice went in to cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. Ms Lopez was directed by the ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) to perform CPR, until paramedics could arrive.

“Fortunately Ms Lopez’s first aid knowledge was excellent and immediately started performing CPR before an ACTAS crew arrived two minutes later. It was Ms Lopez’s early CPR intervention that contributed greatly to Mr Brice’s chance of survival.

“Upon arriving at the scene, ACTAS intensive care paramedics used their cardiac monitor to defibrillate Mr Brice and they successfully restored a normal heart beat before transporting him to the Canberra Hospital.

“This incident is a great example of what to do and when, if faced with a similar emergency situation. Calling Emergency Triple Zero (000) as soon as possible and following the advice of ACTAS staff is vital to ensuring the best possible outcome and to remain calm during a traumatic event.

“Having prior knowledge of CPR and other basic first aid techniques is helpful in any emergency, and I encourage Canberrans to keep their knowledge of first aid practises up to date.

“I also encourage workplaces, shopping centres and other venues to have a defibrillator installed that will assist in performing any pre-hospital treatment prior to ambulance arrival at the scene.

“I am pleased to say that Mr Brice has now made a full recovery and is horse riding again.”
