CDS providing job opportunities to people with disability

Released 10/09/2018

The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is proving a huge success, not just for its environmental outcomes, but because it is employing 15 people with disability and delivering real social outcomes for the Canberra community.

Minister for City Services Chris Steel and Tara Cheyne MLA visited one of the CDS depots today to see how the CDS social enterprise model was working.

“In addition to working with charity partners Salvos and Vinnies, the CDS network operator Return It has linked up with LEAD, a Canberra organisation that works with local businesses and government to provide employment opportunities to people with a disability,” Mr Steel said.

“The CDS has employed 15 LEAD staff in their two depot sites at Fyshwick and Mitchell, working a number of diverse roles. They have received great training and are developing new skills in a retail environment.

“These employees are making a huge difference and doing an amazing job, helping Canberra residents improve their recycling outcomes. It’s no wonder they have been receiving well-deserved feedback on their excellent customer service.

“Unlike the NSW scheme, the ACT has people to people collection points, making it easier and friendlier to return containers,” Mr Steel said.

LEAD CEO Keryl Neville said she was over the moon that network operator Return-it approached them to employ people with disabilities in their business.

“It’s great when people come to us because we know they’re keen and we know they’re committed to employing people. Return-It is making a positive contribution to the Canberra community, and by offering people with disabilities paid employment they’re really showing the way,” Ms Neville said.

Ms Neville said it was the kind of work that people really enjoy because it’s in the community, it’s different and staff go to work feeling like they make a difference.

“I’d really recommend that Canberrans get involved and start collecting and returning their containers. Come in and say hi – it’s simple and easy,” Ms Neville concluded.

Since its commencement on 30 June 2018 more than 1.5 million containers have been recycled through the scheme.
