Multicultural Summit paving the way to a more inclusive Canberra

Released 23/11/2018

The ACT Government in partnership with the ACT Multicultural Advisory Council is delivering on a commitment made at the last election to host the 2018 ACT Multicultural Summit. Community stakeholders met today to identify a range of outcomes to sustain Canberra as an inclusive, multicultural community.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Chris Steel MLA said that around 150 community leaders, service providers and government officials worked together at today’s Summit with great success.

“Canberra is already the most inclusive and welcoming city in Australia but we must continue to support service providers and the community itself to provide a city where everyone can thrive.

“Themes discussed included Canberra being a city where diversity is valued, where everyone belongs, and a city that is healthy and accessible now and into the future.”

Multicultural Advisory Council Chair Antonia Kaucz was excited that the Summit provided a dynamic forum for the identification of ideas.

“There is so much energy that is generated when people come together like this and we can use that to build momentum for our new action plan,” Ms Kaucz said.

“We will take the ideas from today’s Summit and work with the Government to prepare a draft plan for further community consideration early in 2019.”
