Removing historic road corridor to protect our suburbs

Released 17/11/2018

The ACT Government has formally requested the removal of the Monash Drive road corridor from the National Capital Plan as it is no longer required due to the completion of the $300 million investment in Majura Parkway.

The proposed arterial road alignment runs along the western foothills of Mount Majura and Mount Ainslie, and was envisioned to act as a bypass around inner Canberra.

This result should be welcomed by residents in the inner north, as it will protect what Canberrans love most about the bush capital.

As our city grows, it’s important our road infrastructure reflects how Canberrans travel. The ACT Government has invested significantly in Canberra’s road network, including the Majura Parkway, which effectively links Canberra’s northern suburbs to the east of the city and the city centre.

The Government has asked the NCA to amend the Territory plan to reflect the corridor as a key environmental and community hub. The alignment may still be used by the ACT Government for active travel and utilities in the future.
