The replacement of over half the ACT’s streetlights officially commenced today in Weston by leading provider Electrix Pty Ltd with Light Emitting Diode (LED) streetlights to be installed across Canberra as the city moves towards a smarter, more reliable and efficient network.
“Canberra has 80,000 lights on streets, footpaths, arterial roads, various parks and open spaces,” Minister City Services Chris Steel said.
“Over 45,000 of these lights on the ACT streetlight network will be replaced with LED technology over the next seven years.
“There are many advantages of upgrading to this form of technology including a longer lifespan of up to 20 years, greater energy efficiency and lower maintenance requirements.”
With the current upgrade, a new digital Central Management System is also being developed offering real time monitoring of the network that will automatically detect failures such as a blown bulb or cable problem, allowing repairs to be addressed more quickly.
“Smart streetlight technology means that we will now know when there is an outage and it can be fixed sooner,” said Mr Steel.
Light output from LED streetlights is also highly directional, which means a higher percentage of the light can be directed towards where it is required, resulting in less wasted and nuisance light.
The improvements are a key strategic action for the ACT Government that will contribute towards reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, and support our move towards zero net emissions by 2020.
“The replacement of old streetlights with energy efficient LEDs will save the territory over 80,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, and save approximately 20,000,000 kWh a year. By the end of the contract the Territory will save approximately $2 million annually in other operation and maintenance costs,” said Mr Steel.
The ACT Government announced the new contract to replace the ACT streetlight network to provider Electrix from 1 May 2018.
The upgrade of new LED lamps will be installed on existing light poles.
ACT residents are reminded that they should avoid coming into contact with Territory owned electrical devices, including street lights, as a safety precaution.
If people notice a faulty device or an outage they should report it to Access Canberra on 13 22 81.
