ACT Government staff to provide emergency recovery assistance in Queensland

Released 22/02/2019

Following devastating floods in Townsville and north-west Queensland, the Queensland Government has asked the ACT and other jurisdictions to help with social recovery efforts. ACT Government staff with experience and skills in helping people recover from a disaster (social recovery) will fly out today.

Minister for Community Services Chris Steel said ACT Directorates were asked to identify willing and available personnel suitable for interstate deployment.

“The ACT has offered two teams of six people for two weeks to help backfill over 200 Queensland Government staff who have been working extended hours in a number of centres established in city and regional areas.

“We have a mix of staff from a number of Directorates with social work, admin and psychology skills as well as rural, indigenous and disaster response experience. Deployed staff are likely to be working with people and communities in flood affected areas that have experienced a significant level of trauma, with the recent flooding following a long period of drought.”

ACT Government staff will be deployed into key roles including helping process grants, referring people to services and managing centres to ensure they are functioning well, welcoming and supporting people in need of assistance, and providing community outreach and communication.

“Our thoughts are with those struggling in north Queensland, and we wish our Community Recovery Team well and thank them for their ongoing dedication to strong and healthy communities.”
