Better local shops in West Belco

Released 06/09/2019

The Dunlop and Fraser shops in West Belco will receive ugrades, delivering on the Government’s commitment to improving public amenity and infrastructure at local shops.

“Residents of Dunlop and Fraser can look forward to improvements at their local shops with work progressing following today’s release of a tender to construct the upgrades,” Minister Steel.

“Local shops are important community hubs that create a sense of belonging and provide opportunities to gather. However ageing public infrastructure can have the opposite effect. We will continue investing in new public infrastructure as our city grows.

“Fraser and Dunlop were identified as local shopping centres in need of improvements with $800,000 allocated to help revitalise and improve access in and around the centres while also encouraging people to shop locally.”

The upgrades at the Fraser shops follows previous consultation with representatives to identify what was important for a future public space upgrade at this local centre.

Priority improvements to be delivered at Fraser include:

  • landscaping, including new retaining walls around existing garden bed
  • improving key pathways and existing stairs to make these safer and more accessible
  • improving public amenity by installing outdoor furniture in the existing courtyard.

Dunlop will receive some minor amenity improvements including a public noticeboard to help residents stay informed as well as new shade sails over the playground in the open space behind the shops to make it more family-friendly and attractive to use throughout the year.

Deputy Chief Minister and Member for Ginninderra, Yvette Berry said “It’s great to see the Government investing in local infrastructure right across the city, including in West Belconnen where I am from. It’s investments like these that make sure our local suburbs remain great places to live.”

Construction is expected to get underway early in 2020 following finalisation of design work and will take approximately six months.
