Canberra Liberals vote with Greens to oppose road upgrades

Released 23/10/2019

The Canberra Liberals have today backed the Greens to oppose calls for the Government to deliver better and safer roads.

In April this year Caroline Le Couteur told Canberrans what she thinks about the Government’s Monaro Highway safety upgrades: “where I do have a problem is that this seems to be the government's major road priority." (Hansard available on the ACT Legislative Assembly Hansard website).

“Data released by AAMI last week backs the Government’s road priorities by demonstrating that the Monaro Highway at Hume is one of the most dangerous stretches of road in Canberra,” Minister for Roads and Active Travel, Chris Steel said.

“Today Labor MLA Bec Cody moved a motion highlighting the investments our Government is making in roads as outlined in the ACT Infrastructure Plan and called on the Government to deliver this infrastructure for the Southside and across Canberra.”

Minister Steel said that it was disappointing that the Canberra Liberals did a deal with the Greens to vote down the motion and said it showed that they don’t believe in delivering the road infrastructure Canberra needs.

“The Canberra Liberals and the ACT Greens have teamed up to vote against the delivery of road upgrades which will support better public transport, and a safe and efficient commute for all Canberrans.”

“This shows that the Liberals and the Greens don’t support the delivery of our upgrades to Monaro Highway and duplicating Athllon Drive for the Southside. And on the Northside, duplicating William Hovell Drive and our continued duplication of Gundaroo Drive and its extension to Belconnen.”

“ACT Labor is the only party that acknowledges the importance of investing in all infrastructure that keeps Canberrans moving including roads, the public transport that runs on it, and walking and cycling infrastructure.”
