Works to make the city centre safer and easier to move around were completed today, with improvements made to the extended City Interchange along Alinga Street and permanent changes to the traffic arrangements on Alinga Street. Two new bus shelters were installed on platforms 1 and 2 on Alinga Street west of Northbourne Avenue.
"The new shelters will provide protection from the elements while also improving the overall amenity and appearance of the area. New bike rails were also installed," Minister for City Services Chris Steel said.
"These works follow on from the expansion of the City Interchange undertaken to complement the introduction of the new bus network and integration with Light Rail. These previous works included repairs to the road surface on Alinga Street as well as removal and repositioning of some street furniture.
"The work also complements the upgrades to the road verge on Northbourne Avenue and the Alinga Street light rail stop. Expanding the city interchange across to Alinga Street west will ensure better integration with the Alinga Street light rail stop for customers interchanging to bus services.
"As part of these works, Alinga Street is now open to bus and local traffic only between Northbourne Avenue and Moore Street/West Row. This will improve access to public transport for residents while also improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and motorists on Northbourne Avenue.
"The changed traffic arrangements have brought the western side of the City Interchange in line with the arrangements in the rest of the Interchange."
Under these new traffic arrangements vehicles leaving Odgers Lane will still be allowed to turn left onto Alinga Street.
