Tara Cheyne MLA, Member for Ginninderra

The ACT Government is supporting 45 local community organisations to be more effective and efficient through the 2018-19 Community Support and Infrastructure Grant Program.

A total of $225,000 in funding has been committed to support community organisations to deliver projects under this 2018-19 grant round.

Member for Ginninderra, Tara Cheyne, on behalf of Minister for City Services Chris Steel, congratulated this year’s successful applicants and said the ACT Government looked forward to seeing the great outcomes that will come from this year’s grants. The successful projects include:

  • $5,800 for disability friendly furniture for the Multiple Sclerosis ACT office;
  • $10,000 to Outward Bound in Tharwa to upgrade their reverse osmosis water purification system;
  • $6,500 to support the AIDS Action Council opening the ACT’s Pride Centre;
  • $5,000 for security upgrades at the Canberra Seniors Centre in Turner; and
  • $6,728 to Scullin Community Group for its entrepreneurship hub, Scullin Traders

Ms Cheyne said this year’s recipients demonstrated the incredible work being done by local community organisations across Canberra.

“These organisations provide vital services and community connections to thousands of Canberrans,” Ms Cheyne said.

“Programs like the Community Support and Infrastructure Grant Program are part of the ACT Government’s commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive city.”

Ms Cheyne said the Scullin Community Group’s entrepreneurship hub, Scullin Traders, was just one example of how these grants could impact groups and communities throughout Canberra.

The community-run hub encompasses a co-working space, couches to enjoy coffee and the Scullin General Store, selling a range of fresh produce, plants, artwork, jewellery and more.

“The establishment of the Scullin Traders has breathed new life into the Scullin shops,” Ms Cheyne said.

“The Scullin Community Group’s enthusiasm and dedication to creating a thriving, connected suburb and revitalising the existing shops has been inspiring. This grant will help ensure that this initiative continues to deliver more community-building projects.”

The grants are awarded under the following three categories: community support and capacity; non-fixed infrastructure and equipment; and minor capital works and fixed infrastructure.
