New vending machine style drop off points for CDS

Released 09/08/2019

New technology has been installed at the CDS depot at Phillip to make it even easier for customers to quickly turn their eligible bottles and cans into cash.

Minister for City Services, Chris Steel, said the new reverse vending machine style technology installed at Phillip is the result of home-grown Australian innovation, specifically designed for modern Australian programs like the ACT CDS.

"This new way of depositing containers is just another way that we're making the CDS more accessible to Canberrans to exchange eligible beverage containers for cash," Minister Steel said.

"Over 30 million containers have now been deposited through the scheme and we want to encourage Canberrans to continue collecting their bottles and cans to drop off.

"The new machines at Phillip will be trialled and if successful, you'll see more of these machines rolled out around Canberra."

Unlike other automated counting systems that require customers to visit a separate location to convert a docket into cash, the machines at Phillip depot are connected to an ATM that pays customers immediate cash on the spot.

The technology was developed by Container Deposit Systems Australia (CDSA) who have decades of experience with manual handling and counting of beverage containers. CDSA worked with leading Australian partners including the University of South Australia and SAGE Automation to develop technology that makes it faster and easier for customers to get cash refunds.

The Phillip depot is located at 17 Dundas Court, Phillip. It is open 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 4.00pm on weekends.

There are 21 CDS drop off points across the ACT. For a full list of locations visit actcds.com.au
