Road improvements vital to our growing city

Released 06/06/2019

The ACT Government is committed to building better roads and upgrading key intersections to help ease congestion and keep Canberrans safe and moving around our city quickly.

We’re helping cut travel times for people in Belconnen, Woden, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong by delivering the full duplication of Athllon Drive, William Hovell Drive and the major arterial road between Belconnen and Gungahlin. These works will also include active travel upgrades, such as new bike paths.

It’s concerning that the ACT Greens are calling to cut our investment in our road network, particularly when these investments make our roads safer, improve travel times for in our suburbs and allow our public transport network to function.

The roads funding in this year’s Budget will see key safety improvements at locations that have been the site of crashes, injuries to motorists and damage to property.

This Budget also increases funding for the ACT Government’s road resealing program – a program that we are working to ensure contains material recycled and diverted from landfill.

The major roads projects announced in the ACT Budget also include significant improvements to bike paths and footpaths, including the improvement of on road cycling infrastructure as well as new dedicated off-road shared paths.

While the Greens oppose better roads, ACT Labor is committed to improving our road network, upgrading footpaths and bike paths, making our roads safer and helping commuters get home from work quicker so they can spend more time with their families and less time on the road.
