Statement: Departure of TCCS Director-General

Released 28/03/2019 - Joint media release

Minister for Transport Meegan Fitzharris and Minister for City Services Chris Steel have thanked Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) Director-General Emma Thomas after she notified staff that she will be leaving the ACT public service.

During her time at TCCS, Ms Thomas has supported the Government in delivering a number of key commitments to the people of Canberra, including stage one of the light rail network - a project that Ms Thomas was brought to Canberra to help deliver.

“Emma has supported the Government for a number of years and provided excellent advice to me and to the Government. She is highly regarded as an outstanding leader within TCCS, the ACT Public Service and in her many engagements with stakeholders and members of our community. I especially valued her leadership role in the establishment of a new Directorate in developing a shared sense of purpose amongst a large workforce delivering services for our community every day,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“While I am sad to see her go, Emma has helped the Government deliver on significant commitments, including stage one of light rail, a new bus network, the city wide rollout of green bins and significant road upgrades across the ACT.

Minister Steel said that he was proud of the achievements they had made in the city services portfolio since he entered the Ministry.

“Emma has been at the forefront on how we engaged the community through the Better Suburbs Forum to enhance the delivery of better city services in suburbs across the Territory,” Minister Steel said.

“Emma’s contribution is evident across so many areas of our work including building high quality public spaces in Canberra,  our ‘smart city’ LED streetlight replacement program, our nation leading work on our approach to plastics, as well as delivering key roads projects.”

“We wish Ms Thomas all the best in her future endeavours,” said Ministers Fitzharris and Steel.

Ms Thomas was appointed as founding head of the Capital Metro Agency in October 2013. When Transport Canberra was formed in 1 July 2016, she led the establishment of the new Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate.

Ms Thomas will finish in the job on 30 April following the start of light rail stage 1. A process to identify her successor will start immediately.
