Work on Tuggeranong’s Anketell Street to begin

Released 14/01/2019

Work will get underway this week on the second stage of public realm improvements to Anketell Street as the ACT Government continues to breathe new life into Tuggeranong’s Town Centre.

Minister for City Services Chris Steel today announced the start of works between Pittman Street and Reed Street North, which follow on from the first stage of works that were completed in mid-2017.

“The community identified key improvements in the Tuggeranong Town Centre Master Plan and I’m pleased to announce that the ACT Government is continuing to deliver these improvements as another step in the $7 million of upgrades,” Minister Steel said.

“In November 2017 works were completed on the Anketell Street courtyard (Stage 1) opposite South Point shopping mall. These works opened up the space with a new paved area, street furniture, a feature light and more suitable tree species.

“The second stage of public realm improvements will get underway this week. These improvements will continue to contribute to a safer, friendlier, more accessible and more vibrant public space that will encourage our community to spend time in it.”

The key priorities of the next stage of the Anketell Street north upgrade, between Reed Street North and Pittman Street, include:

  • a raised pedestrian zone and low speed traffic environment
  • off-road cycle lane
  • improvements to paved areas
  • tree replacement
  • better areas for outdoor dining
  • improved lighting
  • more furniture along the street.

“Over the next four years the Tuggeranong Town Centre will be transformed with continued investment in active travel and streetscape improvements. I look forward to seeing the changes and especially seeing more people enjoying the beautiful views of the lake and the surrounds,” Minister Steel said.
