The second stage of the duplication of Gundaroo Drive has reached the finishing line following the opening today of four lanes between Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway.
"The ACT Government is committed to building a better and safer road network and the completion of this duplication project is a key step in achieving this," said Minister for Roads and Active Travel, Chris Steel.
"Work on the $30 million duplication between Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway got underway in mid-2018 and has been completed on time and within budget."
Four lanes of traffic between Nudurr Drive and the Barton Highway were opened in June 2019.
Key features of this project include:
- duplication of 2.45 kilometres of Gundaroo Drive between Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway to provide an additional lane in each direction
- new off-road paths to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians
- LED streetlights to improve streetlight efficiency
- improved bus facilities including new shelters
- noise walls to reduce traffic noise for nearby residents
- on-road cycle lanes to improve safety conditions for cyclists
- new landscaping including 450 trees and 50,000 shrubs planted along the corridor.
All major duplication works have now been completed. Works will finish up in the median in the coming weeks after which time the speed limit will be reinstated to 80km/h between Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway.
"We know Gungahlin residents will be pleased to see this duplication project completed and I'd like to sincerely thank them for their patience and understanding whilst this and many other major projects in their region were completed," Minister Steel said.
"We now turn our focus to the duplication of the road connecting Belconnen and Gungahlin between the Barton Highway and Ginninderra Drive. We are moving through approvals and expect to release the tender for construction in July ahead of construction commencing in spring.
"The ACT Government is planning and delivering an infrastructure program that meets the needs of our growing city.
