ACT Heritage Library exhibition: The art of the story circle

Released 02/03/2021

The ACT’s Heritage Library will tonight host its first exhibition since the arrival of the pandemic by showcasing more than 100 stories from across the Canberra community.

Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel said the digital exhibition, ‘The Art of the Story Circle’ explores the positive, negative, and diverse range of experiences of Canberrans from all walks of life.

“It examines some of the serious issues faced throughout our history, including mental illness and homelessness as well as some of the proud personal achievements made by everyday Canberrans,” Minister Steel said.

“Stories in the exhibition include those from migrants, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and members of our LGBTQIA+ communities.

“Digital screens in the library will feature the individual tales with some various physical items also on display helping to tell the personal stories.

“It is another example of how our libraries are inclusive places for all Canberrans, and I urge the community to support the exhibition and book a visit.

“The ACT Heritage Library helps tell the stories of Canberra and its people. It collects, preserves, promotes and provides access to documents that record the lives of Canberrans at home and in the wider community.

“The exhibition brings together a decade of digital story telling work by by Jenni Savigny at Gen S Stories in partnership with PhotoAccess.

“Guests tonight will include some of the story tellers who will see their exhibition brought to life.”

The Art of the Story Circle exhibition is a free event and will be at the ACT Heritage Library in Fyshwick until 30 April 2021.

The short digital stories were made possible through partnerships with several community organisations.
