Make child safety your priority at school drop offs and pick-ups

Released 06/02/2020

We’re reminding Canberra drivers to keep our kids safe by parking safely and legally at school drop offs and pick-ups.

With the new school year in full swing, Access Canberra’s Executive Branch Manager, Fair Trading and Compliance, Josh Rynehart said safety is everyone’s responsibility and road users should think about child safety first when driving and parking around school zones.

“If you park in a no-parking zone, on a crossing, a nature strip or even across a cycle lane, you could be putting our kids’ lives at risk.

“When kids and other pedestrians can’t see the road properly, because someone is parked illegally, it puts their lives at risk.

“For drop offs in the morning, take some extra time and park a little further away from school and walk with your kids the rest of the way.

“You might also consider arranging a meeting spot with your kids for pick-up time. That way if you’re running late, your kids know where to safely wait and you don’t need to rush.

“At Access Canberra, we monitor school zones by using Licence Plate Recognition vans to encourage safe driving and parking practices in these high-risk zones.

“Anyone parking dangerously or illegally can expect to be fined. So, let’s work together to keep our kids safe and avoid unnecessary infringements, by parking safely and legally around school zones.
