Canberra champions honoured with street names

Released 15/06/2012

An aviation inventor and a local philanthropist will have part of their legacy preserved in the ACT with Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, naming streets in their honour.

"Aviation inventor, the late Dr David Warren AO, will be acknowledged with the naming of 'David Warren Road' in Hume, while 'Ian Nicol Street' in Watson, recognises the work of the late ACT Barrister, Ian Nicol AM," Mr Corbell said.

Dr Warren served as principal research scientist at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne from 1952 to 1983. He and his team designed and constructed the world's first flight-data recorder prototype in 1956; this device became known as the 'black box'.

Dr Warren was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2002 for his services to the aviation industry. Dr Warren passed away in July 2010.

"The road provides access to the Emergency Services Agency Training Centre and helicopter base in Hume which is a fitting acknowledgement of the service to the aviation industry by Dr Warren," Mr Corbell said.

"The road named in Mr Nicol's honour is located within the new development in Watson 'The Fair' and will align with the overall placename theme in Watson of judges and members of the legal profession.

"Mr Nicol was a great local philanthropist who worked tirelessly with Hartley Lifecare to assist people living with a disability," said Mr Corbell. "He was a prominent solicitor and member of the Canberra community who passed away in 2007 in a road accident."

Mr Nicol was well known and regarded for his pro bono legal work after being admitted to practise as a barrister and solicitor in ACT and NSW in 1979, Victoria in 1988 and Western Australia in 1989.

"Most of Canberra's suburbs are named after Australians who have contributed to the existence of Australia as a nation," Mr Corbell said.

"Recognising these prominent past Canberrans with roads named in their honour is another reminder of the unique and significant legacy we have here in the ACT."
