Five extra emergency ambulances to boost ACT's fleet

Released 28/05/2012

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, has today handed over the keys for five extra emergency ambulance vehicles to the ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) providing a major boost to the Territory's frontline services.

"This $1.3million investment by the ACT Government, backed up by 30 additional front line positions also funded in the 2011-12 budget means two additional 24/7 ambulance crews will be available across the Territory, 24 hours a day, seven days a week by June 30," Mr Corbell said today.

"Six additional ACTAS headquarters staff have also been recruited supporting the establishment of a new Quality, Safety and Risk Management Unit and the strengthening of the ACTAS Education Business Unit.

Mr Corbell said the new ambulances will help bolster existing ACTAS fleet and ensure our frontline services continue to be well prepared for emergency patient care right around the clock.

The new vehicles represent the most modern technology and have been built to the latest specification. They feature:

  • Fitted with the Mercedes Turbo Diesel engine package to meet Euro 5 emissions;
  • Drug warming and cooling lockers to maintain constant temperature in the ACT environment;
  • A modern heating system to maintain patient comfort;
  • Reversing cameras and the latest Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking and,
  • An interior lighting system incorporating the latest LED lighting in both the drivers cabin and patient care area.

"In addition, ACTAS has also replaced four new vehicles including three frontline emergency ambulances and one non-urgent patient transport vehicle under the ACT Emergency Services Agency Vehicle Replacement Program.

"The ACT Government continues to give priority to ensuring Canberrans receive vital care, and as quickly as possible, in emergency situations.

"Canberra has a growing population and the Government is investing in services that the community needs and expects to meet this growing demand.

"This is another example of ACT Labor delivering frontline services on time and within budget, focusing on positioning our services to meet community demand in our growing city."
