State-of-the-art emergency facility for West Belconnen

Released 18/10/2013

Emergency capabilities in Belconnen have been given an extra boost with the official opening of the new West Belconnen Ambulance and Fire & Rescue Station in Charnwood by the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, today.

"This new $12 million state-of-the-art ambulance and fire & rescue station will assist in providing enhanced emergency service coverage today and into the future as the West Belconnen area expands," Mr Corbell said.

"The ACT Government has delivered this project on time and under budget for the community of West Belconnen.

 "This project will provide the first dedicated ambulance station for West Belconnen, and replaces the former Charnwood fire & rescue station and will house one intensive care paramedic crew and up to 2 fire fighting crews including an urban fire & rescue pumper and 2 bushfire tankers.

 "Strategically locating emergency facilities, to better serve the needs of the community, will save more lives, property and the environment.

Tomorrow, local residents will get an opportunity to visit their new ambulance and fire & rescue station with an open day from 10.30- 2.30pm.

Frontline staff members from both ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire & Rescue have been closely involved with all details, including design, of the new station.

The new ambulance and fire & rescue station has many environmentally sustainable design initiatives including;

  • Rainwater harvesting;
  • Hydronic in-slab heating and cooling;
  • Solar electricity and hot water; and
  • Energy saving initiatives such as sensor lighting.

The project also included the construction of a new roundabout at the main intersection of Lhotsky Street and Charnwood Place to address a long standing traffic congestion issue.
