ACT achieves nation-leading outcomes in radiotherapy services

Released 11/11/2015

The latest report card on the provision and timeliness of radiotherapy services shows the ACT leading the nation in several areas and performing better than the national average on patient waiting times, Minister for Health Simon Corbell said today.

Mr Corbell welcomed the latest statistics on radiotherapy services issued by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, noting that the ACT performed well across the board.

“The ACT achieved the highest proportion of patients treated within the emergency timeframe of one day, recording a result of 98.5 per cent,” Mr Corbell said.

“This is consistent with our other strong performances in the most critical of emergency care areas, when timely intervention is vital in saving lives.”

The report also found that 90% of all patients who received radiotherapy in the ACT commenced treatment within 24 days, well ahead of the national average waiting time of 31 days.

“Canberrans are fortunate to have an efficient, modern cancer centre that co-locates all of the services that patients need under one roof,” Mr Corbell said.

“The $48.7 million Canberra Region and Cancer Centre at Canberra Hospital was delivered as part of the ACT Government’s $900 million Health Infrastructure Program.

“The centre integrates services, research and teaching programs within a dedicated building to facilitate and drive improved cancer treatment for the ACT and surrounding region. It also brings together a full range of services including assessment, diagnostics and treatment to enable them to provide collaborative care.”

The ACT also recorded the best waiting time result for commencing treatment of breast cancer and lung cancer across all jurisdictions. Of the states and territories, the ACT was most affected by cross-border patient flows, with 40 per cent of services being provided to interstate residents.
